This is 8 degrees of slack. I assume this is why someone thought the distributor rotor needed a paper shim.
The dowel sleeve that stayed in the block was easy to remove. The one that stayed in the timing cover was seized.
I didn't realize that any EFI engines were built with fuel pump eccentrics, but everything about this long block appears to be factory, including the timing cover gasket. So I think replacing it now was the right decision - I don't think it had many miles left, and it's best to change it while the oil pan is off.
