use a couple lug nuts to keep the rotor seated on the hub fully. with the brakes mocked up, the tab for the caliper should always have a bit of a gap away from the tab of the backing plate. sliding the caliper toward the center of the truck (to the right for this driver side), check the gap. if there is no gap you need the shim. if the shim is in and the gap is larger than 1/4" you may need to remove the shim. this is mine with the shim installed.
as the pads wear over time, the caliper will slide further that direction. so you want to keep the gap small. but with no gap, you will probably not be able to install the caliper/pads correctly anwyays
