beltbyhand.jpg Smallblock V8 Serpentine Belts can usually be changed without tools.

Push the long span of belt (light green) down hard enough to compress the tensioner (dark green) as far as possible. Then pinch the belt around the alternator pulley (orange) so that it can't roll back around when the belt goes slack. While holding the alternator, slip the loose belt out from under the smooth idler. Then the belt can be released, allowing the tensioner to relax onto its stop. The same process works for installing the belt.

If the belt rolls around the crank pulley, it indicates at least 1 of these conditions:
1) belt contaminated/varnished sliding on pulley; wash or replace belt
2) crank pulley contaminated/varnished not gripping belt; wash or sandblast pulley
3) low compression allowing the crank to rotate; jam the balancer, or use a 15mm wrench on the tensioner
