Where to start with this picture. The pinion shaft is the bar hanging down out of the carrier. The green arrow is pointing to the C clip that sits in the end of the axle (yellow arrow) holding the axle in. The red arrow... oh boy... The red arrow shows the location of the pinion shaft lock bolt. This bolt is usually snapped in half long before you even thought about ripping your rear apart. If yours is in tact, someone up there likes you.
I was not prepared for this. And you've also got a minimal amount of space working against you. This bolt needs to come out in order for the pinion shaft to slide out like in the photo. I talked to a few guys I know and they said drill it out. You can rotate the driveshaft and put bolt hole outside of the pumpkin, but just a little bit outside. The drill hits the cover mounting surface and you can't get a good angle on the broken bolt inside the hole. I read a bunch of wacky ideas on the internet on how to get it out. My easy solution - check the next slide....
