It's very common for the pinion nut (center of the flange or yoke) to get loose over the years, resulting in noise, vibration, wear, and ultimately damage to the ring & pinion gears, if not the whole rear end (due to impacts & metal shavings in the bearings). So it should be checked at least every 3 years. But it's very complicated to adjust it properly, so let a pro decide if it can be re-tightened, or if parts need to be replaced.
