I think this foam pad was on my original '83 trans - I don't ever remember seeing one in a JY. But over the years, it has become saturated with trans oil, engine oil, and whatever else, and it's not as fluffy as it once was. So to keep splash & exhaust from entering thru the boot, I'm adding some new foam. It's actually open-cell, but it's the thickest I could find in a hurry, and I sprayed it with liquid electrical tape (same as tool handle rubber) to make it less-permeable.
